Papers, 1943-1945.

Papers, 1943-1945, containing military records, photographs, and newspaper clippings. The military records series includes correspondence in Chinese and English from Chinese generals Chang Fah-Kwei and Li Han-Chung to Bowman and General Joseph Stilwell, organizational charts of the Fourth War Zone, instructions for Japanese General Tanaka on the surrender, and telegrams describing the actual surrender ceremony. The photograph series contains 24 black and white images of varying sizes. The majority depict American soldiers working with their Chinese counterparts. Also included are views of China, the ceremony where General Tanaka, representing the Japanese, surrendered to the Allies, individual portraits of Harwood Bowman, and two aerial views of Kweilei Kwangsi Province. General Bowman makes remarks in ink on the backs of serveral photographs. The newspaper clippings consist of Chinese and English editions of the Canton Daily Sun from 1945. Bowman's personal flag has been placed with the ADAH Museum Division and his situation and troop maps, 1944-1945, are listed as maps of the fourth war zone in southern China, CD-1 and CE-1, and are described separately.

Harwood C. Bowman was born ca. 1895 in Montgomery, Ala. He graduated from the University of Ala. in 1916 and joined the 1st Alabama Cavalry where he served under General R.E. Steiner and Colonel Bibb Graves on the Mexican border. In 1917 he entered the Regular Army by competitive exam. While in the army, he served in the artillery through all grades from 2nd Lieutenant to Colonel, and eventually became Director of the Dept. of Tactics at the Field Artillery School in Fort Sill, Okla...
